چکیده

It seems likely that all languages make a distinction between words belonging to functional categories and those belonging to lexical categories, a distinction which roughly coincides with the sets of open and closed class items. Nouns, verbs and adjectives constitute the class of lexical categories in English, conjunctions and other sorts of particles fall into the class of functional categories. The distinction between lexical and functional categories plays an important role it happens that words belonging to functional categories display phonological properties significantly different from those of words belonging to lexical 1 The research for this paper was carried out in part with the support of NSF grant BNS-86-17827. This paper is a slightly revised version of a paper appearing in Signal to Syntax, ed. Both these versions involve a substantial revision of an earlier 1993 manuscript which circulated under the same title.

The Prosody of Discourse Structure and Content in the Production of Persian EFL Learners

The present research addressed the prosodic realization of global and local text structure and content in the spoken discourse data produced by Persian EFL learners. Two newspaper articles were analyzed using Rhetorical Structure Theory. Based on these analyses, the global structure in terms of hierarchical level, the local structure in terms of the relative importance of text segments and the ...

Word segmentation in Persian continuous speech using F0 contour

Word segmentation in continuous speech is a complex cognitive process. Previous research on spoken word segmentation has revealed that in fixed-stress languages, listeners use acoustic cues to stress to de-segment speech into words. It has been further assumed that stress in non-final or non-initial position hinders the demarcative function of this prosodic factor. In Persian, stress is retract...

Using Prosodic Information to Discriminate between Function and Content Words

Early perceptual processing capabilities are likely to contribute to the categorization of lexical vs. grammatical words by newborns. This lexical categorization could be performed by detecting differences in the prosodic structure of these word categories. We demonstrated that this lexical categorization could be performed using many prosodic cues (duration, F0, energy and formants) automatica...

Prosodic effects on temporal structure of monosyllabic CVC words in American English

Prosody serves an important function in speech communication: prosodic phrasing groups words into pragmatically and semantically coherent smaller chunks and prosodic prominence encodes the discourse-level status and rhythmic structure of a word within a phrase. Acoustic cues to prosody are available from the speech signal and can be used by listeners to recover the pragmatic and discourse meani...

Constraints on the acquisition of simplex and complex words in German

It is a common assumption that prosodic restrictions on the shape of children’s early productions refer to the prosodic word (cf. [1]). However, empirical research on word structure has focused almost exclusively on simplex words where the morphosyntactic and prosodic word boundaries coincide ([2], [3], [4], [5]). In this paper, we provide new evidence from the acquisition of German complex wor...

Computational extraction of lexico-grammatical information for generation of Swedish intonation

This article presents a discussion of a number of algorithms being developed which will enable the generation of prosodic structure for Swedish restricted texts. These algorithms, including a word-class tagger, a complex-word identifier and a prosodic parser form part of a linguistic preprocessor to a text-to-speech system for generation of intonation. PROSODIC STRUCTURE One of the goals of cur...
